When a bill rises, the instinct is to hunt for small culprits — a charger left plugged in, a bulb burning in an empty room. Those habits are worth having, but they are almost never the reason the number moved. Electricity billing is arithmetic, and the arithmetic is unforgiving: units consumed equal watts multiplied by hours. An appliance only matters to your bill if its wattage and its running hours are both meaningful.
The one formula that explains everything
Units (kWh) = watts × hours ÷ 1,000. A 1,000 W appliance running for one hour consumes exactly one unit. A 10 W device would need a hundred hours to do the same. Why air conditioning dominates a summer bill
An air conditioner is the only appliance in a typical home that combines very high wattage with many consecutive hours of operation. Nothing else in the house does both. The quiet second place: heating water and pumping it
Anything that heats or moves water is expensive to run, because both tasks are physically demanding. Geysers, electric kettles and immersion heaters are among the highest-wattage devices in most homes. Water pumps are similar: high draw, and in buildings with poor tank management they run far longer than necessary because of overflow, leaks or manual switching that nobody remembers to reverse. The refrigerator problem
A refrigerator is moderate in wattage but runs continuously, all year, which puts it among the largest annual consumers in most households. It is also the appliance most likely to be old. Walk through the house with a notepad. For each appliance, record the wattage from its nameplate or rating label, how many you own, and roughly how many hours a day it runs. Multiply, convert to units, and sort the list.
