The formula behind every Bangladeshi electricity bill
Utilities print totals, not workings. The underlying calculation is short enough to do on paper, and once you know it you can spot a wrong bill in under a minute.
Total = (Energy charge + Demand charge + Meter rent − Rebates) × 1.05
Energy charge = units priced through your category slabs · Demand charge = sanctioned kW × category rate · Rebates = 0.5% prepaid and/or 5% for paying before the due date · 1.05 = 5% VAT
Get your real consumption
Subtract last month's meter reading from this month's. On a prepaid meter, check the cumulative kWh register rather than the balance screen.
Identify your category and load
The category (LT-A, LT-E, LT-C1…) and the sanctioned load in kW are both printed on your bill or demand note. Load drives the fixed monthly charge.
Price the units through the slabs
Residential units are priced in tiers; commercial and industrial meters use peak and off-peak rates instead. Add demand charge, then VAT last.

LT-A households are billed progressively: the more you use, the more each additional unit costs. The jump between the 401–600 and 601+ tiers is the steepest in the schedule.

A worked example: 250 units in a Dhaka flat
A typical two-bedroom flat with one AC used a few hours a night lands near 250 units in summer. Here is the bill, built the way the utility builds it.

Ten ways to cut your bill that actually work in Bangladesh
Ordered by how much a typical urban household saves. Each one is something you can act on this week without buying new equipment — except the LED swap, which pays for itself in about six weeks.
Run the AC at 24–26°C instead of 18°C
৳400–৳1,200 per month on a 1.5-ton unit
Every degree you lower the thermostat adds roughly 6% to compressor runtime. 25°C with a ceiling fan feels the same as 21°C without one, and the fan costs about ৳12 a month to run.
Service the AC filter every 6–8 weeks in summer
5–12% of cooling energy
Dust on the evaporator forces longer compressor cycles. A ten-minute filter wash is the cheapest efficiency upgrade available in a Dhaka summer.
Set the fridge to 3–5°C and freezer to −18°C
5–10% of household consumption
Colder than that adds no food safety benefit. Also leave 5 cm of clearance behind the fridge so the condenser coil can shed heat.
Replace every CFL and incandescent with LED
৳50–৳150 per bulb per month
A 60W incandescent burning six hours a day costs about ৳95 a month at mid-slab rates. A 9W LED doing the same job costs about ৳14.
Kill standby loads at the switchboard
৳100–৳300 per month
Set-top boxes, old TVs, chargers, printers and always-on IPS units draw 3–15W each around the clock. Ten such devices are roughly 30 units a month.
Shift heavy loads out of the 5–11 PM peak window
25–40% on shifted units for TOU meters
Washing machines, water pumps, ironing and battery charging can all be moved. If you are on a flat residential slab this still helps the grid and reduces load-shedding risk.
Lower the geyser thermostat and switch it off between uses
৳600–৳1,500 per month in winter
A 2 kW geyser left on all day can quietly add 200+ units. Heating for 20 minutes before a shower gives the same result.
Watch the slab boundary near month end
৳200–৳500 in borderline months
Crossing from 300 to 301 units, or from 400 to 401, moves the extra units to a higher rate. If your prepaid meter shows 395 units on the 27th, defer the laundry.
Fix the power factor if you run motors
Avoids a 5–15% penalty on commercial bills
Shops and small factories with pumps, compressors or lifts get penalised below 0.95 power factor. A capacitor bank usually pays back within a year.
Read your own meter on the same date every month
Catches estimated-bill errors early
A photo of the display on the 1st of each month is the strongest evidence you can bring to a billing dispute, and it tells you your true daily average.
Five billing myths worth unlearning
MythSwitching an appliance off at the remote is the same as unplugging it.
Standby mode still draws current. A set-top box on standby uses 8–15W, roughly 8 units a month — more than a whole month of LED lighting in one room.

A stabiliser protects equipment; it adds a small loss of its own. It saves money only by preventing damage, never by cutting units.
MythAn IPS gives you free backup power.
Battery charging is 70–80% efficient, so every backup unit you use costs 1.25–1.4 units on the meter, plus a constant trickle-charge load.
MythThe first 50 units are always cheap for everyone.
The ৳5.32 lifeline rate applies to the whole bill only if total monthly use stays at or below 50 units. Above that, no part of the bill uses the lifeline rate.
MythPrepaid meters run faster than postpaid meters.
Both are calibrated to the same accuracy class. Prepaid feels faster because deductions are visible daily and because arrears, rent and demand charges are taken from the recharge up front.
