How to apply for a new electricity connection

- BPDB: online new connection portal at newconnection.bpdb.gov.bd.
- NESCO: an online new connection service listed on its website.
- Palli Bidyut: your local samity. Many take applications online and at the customer service centre.
- DESCO and DPDC: check each company website for its application route.
Fees and deposits differ by company
There is no single national fee table in the June 2026 tariff order. Each company and samity sets its own. Two examples from official samity pages show how much they can differ.

A refundable security deposit is also taken. The amount depends on the category and load, and the samities we checked list different amounts. Khulna PBS says the service drop (up to 130 feet), the meter and fittings for homes, small shops and charities are supplied by the samity free of charge. Ask your office for the exact figures for your load.
How to choose your load
Your sanctioned load sets the demand charge every month, ৳42 per kW for a home. A single-phase LT connection can be up to 7.5 kW and a three-phase LT connection up to 80 kW.

Add up your real peak use. List the appliances that can run at the same time, add their watts, and divide by 1,000 to get kW. Use the multiple load calculator, which also shows amps and a breaker size. Do not declare the total of every appliance you own, and do not declare less than you need.
New rule: rooftop solar on some new connections
A Power Division circular of December 2025 made net-metered rooftop solar mandatory for new connections in buildings with at least 1,000 square feet of usable roof space, for a minimum of 20 years. For industrial and commercial consumers with an approved load of 10 kW or more, the solar system must be at least 20% of the load. Consumers who ask to raise their load must install rooftop solar for the added load. Read the net metering page and ask your company how this applies to your building.
After you apply
- The company surveys the site and checks the pole, transformer and distance.
- You pay the fees and deposit it asks for.
- The meter is installed and the connection is switched on. Prepaid or postpaid depends on your company.
- Meter rent of ৳40 (single-phase) or ৳250 (three-phase) applies if the company supplied the meter, according to the DPDC and Palli Bidyut notices.

Questions readers ask
What documents do I need for a new electricity connection?
Usually photos, your NID or other ID, and land or rental papers. BPDB also lists a signature, fire safety and installation test certificates if any, and a city corporation certificate and TIN for LT-C1. Ask your company for its own list.
How much does a new connection cost?
It depends on the company. Chattogram PBS-3 lists an application fee of 100 taka for LT single-phase, 300 taka for LT three-phase and 1,000 taka for MT and HT. A refundable security deposit is also taken. Ask your office for the figure for your load.
How long does a new connection take?
The time depends on documents, the survey and whether a new pole or transformer is needed. We could not find an official national time limit, so ask your office for its expected time.
What load should I choose?
List the appliances that run at the same time and add their kW. A home on LT can have up to 7.5 kW on single-phase or 80 kW on three-phase. Each kW adds 42 taka a month to the demand charge.
