See the LT, MT, HT and EHT families, what the same 300 units cost under five categories, and how to ask for a correction.
The four families
The BERC order groups every connection by voltage and size, then by use. The first letters tell you the family.

MT, HT and EHT have their own categories for residential, commercial, industrial, construction, general, temporary, EV charging and irrigation use. See the full tariff tables for each code and rate.
The same usage under five categories
Here is what 300 units a month with a 2 kW sanctioned load costs under five LT categories. LT-A is a home. The others are shown so you can see how much the category changes a bill. Only the right use qualifies for a category: for example, LT-B is only for irrigation pumps.

Who belongs where
- Home or flat: LT-A, with slab rates and a lifeline rate up to 50 units.
- Shop, office or restaurant: LT-E (commercial and office).
- Small factory or workshop: LT-C1 (small industry).
- School, madrasa, mosque, charity or hospital: LT-D1 (education, religious, charitable and hospital).
- Irrigation pump: LT-B (pumps for irrigation or farming).
- EV or battery charging point: LT-D3, which has peak, off-peak and super off-peak rates.
- Street lights and water pumps: LT-D2.
- Construction site: LT-C2. Temporary connection: LT-T.
Rules from the order that affect your category
- New connections with sanctioned load up to 80 kW are treated as LT. Between 50 kW and 80 kW, a new customer can choose LT or MT. Existing customers in that range keep their current category.
- Only LT-A lifeline customers get the ৳4.63 lifeline rate.
- MT-5 users who are mostly residential, such as military housing and university dormitories, are billed with a blended rate: 20% at the MT-5 rate (৳12.58), 72% at the average of the LT-A third and fourth slabs (৳9.36), and 8% at the LT-A top slab (৳17.35). If your category looks wrong
- Find the category code on your bill.
- Compare it with the list above. Write down how the place is really used.
- Ask your company for a tariff change. DPDC has an online application for tariff change, and DESCO’s online customer service system handles tariff changes and bill corrections. Other companies take applications at the local office.
- Ask the office which documents they need. A recent bill and proof of how the place is used are the usual starting points.
- Keep the application number and the date.
Questions readers ask
What is LT-A in Bangladesh electricity?
LT-A is the low-tension residential category for homes and flats. It is the only category with slab rates and a lifeline rate. Rates run from 4.63 to 17.35 taka per unit.
What is the difference between LT and MT?
LT is low tension at 230 or 400 volts, up to 80 kW. MT is medium tension at 11 kV for loads above 50 kW up to 5 MW.
Which category is a shop?
LT-E, which the order calls commercial and office. A shop with a large load may be on MT-2.
Which category is a mosque or school?
LT-D1, which the order calls education, religious and charitable institutions and hospitals.
How do I change my tariff category?
Apply to your electricity company. DPDC has an online tariff change application, and DESCO’s online customer service system handles tariff changes. Ask your office for the documents they need.
Does the category change the demand charge?
Yes. LT-A and LT-B pay 42 taka per kW, LT-C1 pays 48, LT-D1 pays 60, LT-D2, LT-D3 and LT-E pay 90, and LT-C2 and LT-T pay 120.
