An inverter AC modulates compressor speed continuously to match the room's actual heat load, avoiding both the surge and the overshoot. In practice, for the same 1.5-ton cooling capacity and the same room, a well-sized inverter unit uses roughly 25–35% less energy across a full day of intermittent use, because it spends most of its time at low, efficient power rather than cycling at full draw.
The catch: inverter units cost more upfront (often ৳10,000–৳20,000 more for a 1.5-ton split), and the saving only materialises with daily, multi-hour use. A unit run for one hour on occasional hot nights will not recover that price difference within its working life. Inverter makes financial sense specifically for rooms cooled 5+ hours a day through a full summer.
Every degree on the thermostat has a price

A dirty filter or dusty outdoor coil forces the compressor to run longer to move the same heat, typically costing 5–12% extra energy. Wash the indoor filter every 6–8 weeks during peak summer — most split units let you slide it out without tools. Get the outdoor coil professionally cleaned once a year before the hot season starts; a technician visit costs a few hundred taka and often pays for itself within the first month of summer use.
Insulation and heat load: reduce the job before you cool it
- Curtains or reflective film on west-facing windows cut afternoon heat gain substantially in Dhaka's climate, reducing how hard the AC has to work in the evening.
- Close the door of the cooled room. Sounds obvious, but a door left ajar to a hot hallway can add 15–20% to runtime in a small bedroom.
